This picture shows how Quarrymen used to quarry the stone. The quarrymen were lowered down the rock face in cradles supported by ropes or chain. They chipped off the stone and when it fell to the bottom, Quarryboys would collect it and break it in to smaller pieces.

The Hartshill Quarrymen

Hanging around
It was a precarious life
as a Hartshill Quarryman,
suspended on a rope hacking
at the rock face.

They then put these into trucks that were pulled up rails by horses as the slopes were too steep for engines. These rails could be moved to whichever part of the quarry the Quarrymen were working.

When explosives were brought in, the Quarrymen no longer had to be lowered down the rock faces. However the quarries continued to use horses as there was no better way of getting up such steep slopes.

Once the trucks were on flat ground though, the quarries had small locomotives to take the stone along their own train lines to the wharfs or the main railway.

Small locomotives, like this one,
gradually replaced horses
taking the stone from the
quarries to loading points.

What about now?
Judkins Quarry is now being filled in again, with rubbish, as a landfill site. When it’s full it will be covered up and turned into a country park.
